CO・MO・RE YOTSUYA

The concept for this project was a visual story based on the history of Yotsuya, which was an important water source in the Edo Period, that expresses the memory of the land as a spring of lights that enrich the green that stretches throughout the facility. An illuminated pillar stands at the approach from Yotsuya station as a symbolic meet-up spot. A design of sunlight filtering through trees created from varying degrees of light transmission was printed on translucent glass. Layers of prism acrylic and point light sources were arrayed behind this. Light reflecting randomly through the prism effect create the effect of glittering water droplets. Indirect lights on the ceiling stretching out through the passage from the luminous pillar guide people like the flow of a river to the “forest” behind the building. At “Komorebi Square,” which has a lot of greenery, two kinds of lighting techniques were employed: trees lit from below, and down lights on poles above bushes. With both the floor and vertical surfaces illuminated, the lighting environment provides a sense of security. Greenery stretches out serenely, not only from the viewpoint of people strolling through the square, but also from the upper levels of the building. This gives the building and the landscape a united feel. Also, gabion and stone walls along with the sidewalk are lit up with soft, indirect lights to provide the landscape a gentle atmosphere. At the open space at the center of the square, a light projector installed at the 5th floor level casts a pale twilight blue. Arc benches arranged like theater seats complete the amphitheater-like scene.
