JR Kumamoto Station Building

The concept for this project was an “enormous lantern that contains the scenery of Kumamoto.” Taking advantage of a design that shows a multi-story garden behind glass, our concept provides gentle ambient light at the station square. This lantern consists of two main elements. First, scenery elements emblematic of Kumamoto are illuminated at night. These include a waterfall, trees, and the green walls of the garden that makes up the core of the facility. People can enjoy the beauty of nature and the shadows cast by lights from both inside and outside of the building. The second element is lighting installed on the wooden ceilings that embrace the garden. Lights from the horizontally laminated curtain wall sash gently illuminate the outline the buildings rectangular form. Even after the building has closed for the night, a pale blue light cast into the darkness leaves a beautiful light in the town. The light highlights the garden green, and provides comfort and relaxation to passers-by as if it were moon light streaming into forest glade.
