BOSS E・ZO FUKUOKA

BOSS E・ZO FUKUOKA is an entertainment complex located next to the dome-shaped home of the “Fukuoka SoftBank HAWKS,” a Japanese professional baseball team. It has various entertainment options including Japan’s first 100 meter-long tube-type slider attached to a building, theaters, a virtual-reality game arcade, and a food court. Such a location needed a suitable façade with light shows to form the core of its fun mood.
The building’s fan-shaped wall faces the baseball stadium and becomes a lighting canvas at night. The building’s location near the sea guided the concept of “Water Entertainment.” We developed three show modes: Cascade, Fountain, and Ripple. These modes were built to follow the traditional Japanese storyline structure of “introduction, development, twist, and conclusion,” and take advantage of protruding architectural elements including box-shaped terraces and the tube slide.
Architectural lighting techniques are used for the visual effects to achieve sophistication not possible with typical LED vision or tube lighting that directly shows the light source. We used indirect lighting in the vertical recesses to take advantage of the vertical architectural design of the exterior. This ensured an exquisite appearance during the day, and reduced light pollution to a neighboring residential tower at night.
On top of the three show modes, there is a special mode called “Hawks” that livens up the stadium. Hawks mode was played at the moment that the Fukuoka SoftBank HAWKS won the 2020 Japan Series, which was an unforgettable moment for their fans.
