As Tokyo attracted attention from the world for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, overseas visitors were expected to increase. To take advantage of this chance to draw more attention to TOKYO SKYTREE from all over the world, a lighting design renewal project to add additional LED lighting fixtures commenced in 2019.

More lights were installed on the gain tower atop the main tower body and white lights were replaced with full color bulbs to provide more color variation and enable dynamic effects. These upgrades made it possible to watch the lights of SKYTREE change each day even from a distance. Full color lighting fixtures were installed at points 150 and 250 meters above the ground that had previously remained dark gaps in the tower's lighting. Now all the lights are connected and illumination covers the whole tower.
Along with these improvements, the lighting design, incorporating the usual lighting styles of “Iki,” “Miyabi,” and “Nobori,” and an animated light sequence that plays just before the lights are switched on. This was the start of new lighting patterns with new colors and animations.

“Iki”
Emerald green was added to the existing aqua to enrich representations of water. There are three new aquiform lighting patterns: a spring with bubbles rising up one after another, a waterfall that pours vigorously from the top, and water balloons that burst with brilliant lights like fireworks. They represent strength suitable for the image of “Iki,” the essence of Kokoroiki, the straightforward, down-to-earth spirit of Tokyo city dwellers.

“Miyabi”
Animated lights move from trusses at the north, east, and west that are illuminated in Edo purple and form the image of an elegant feather robe that gradually moves in a rising spiral. With the motif of a classical Japanese fan dance, circles of light move up and down like folding-fans dancing gracefully.

“Nobori”
Newly installed lighting devices made it possible to present vertical lights that rise seamlessly from bottom to top. These lights move rhythmically like a hoisted banner, enhancing the impression of festival.

When the lights switched on, and every 15 minutes while the above three lighting styles are active, the tower will turn a pale white and play a vivid lighting sequence that fades through the colors of the rainbow on the gain tower and at the 250 and 150 meter points. As a fabulous display never seen before, the rainbow sequence has become popular. Also, at the quarter-, half-, and three-quarter-hour marks, the theme color of the day (aqua for “Iki,” Edo-purple for “Miyabi,” and tangerine for “Nobori”) will appear and harmonize with the lighting of the day.
